You can’t change the square footage of your house without a major investment, but you can influence how big or small the rooms feel with little to no cost. Here are five tips to make your space appear as large as possible to buyers.
Keep walkways clear
Every home has paths, from the kitchen to the dining room or from the living room to the bathroom, and these paths must be clear. You may have gotten used to a desk jutting into the office doorway, but buyers will think your office isn’t big enough.
Do you have a clear view?
In addition to a clear path from room to room, you should have a clear line of sight through doorways and windows. Keep tall furniture away from doorways, and open the shower curtain to expose the entire bathroom. Don’t block any part of windows or sliding doors.
Eliminate clutter
Think your house is decluttered? Not even close. Few people go far enough. Don’t put books and magazines in neat piles—get rid of them. Put figurines and other knickknacks in the attic. Rent a storage unit and reduce your furniture to the bare minimum for you to live in the property.
Pick proper paint
If you’re going to repaint some rooms, go with colors that feel cool, such as light blue or light green.
More light is always better
Leave curtains and blinds open to let in sunlight, moonlight, streetlights—whatever you can get. Also, add lamps to any dark corners.
When you put your house on the market, it’s time to think about the people who will consider buying your home. The better the impression your house makes on buyers, the closer you will be to making a sale.
